How can I stop OneDrive from syncing and taking over my save locations?

I never intentionally asked OneDrive to upload or sync my files, but I keep finding documents in it. Windows also keeps choosing OneDrive as the default save location, even after I change it. What's the best way to disable the syncing and backup features, stop it from launching automatically, and make sure my files stay in local folders? Do I need to unlink or uninstall OneDrive entirely?

If Office apps are also saving to OneDrive by default, change that separately in Word or Excel. Go to File > Options > Save, disable the option that defaults cloud files to AutoSave, and enable saving to the computer by default. Then select a local Documents folder rather than a OneDrive folder.

The simplest approach is to open the OneDrive cloud icon, go to Settings, then Account, and choose “Unlink this PC.” After that, disable OneDrive under Startup Apps so it does not launch every time Windows starts. You usually do not need to uninstall it; leaving it installed but unlinked keeps it from syncing while avoiding some of the problems that can come from removing a Windows-integrated app.

On Windows 11, you can find this under Task Manager’s Startup apps tab. Disable OneDrive there after closing it, and it should stay disabled unless an update or setup process turns it back on.

If you want a stronger system-wide block, Windows Pro users can disable OneDrive through Group Policy. For most people, though, unlinking the computer, turning off Desktop/Documents/Pictures backup, and disabling automatic startup is enough to keep local files local.
