Hey everyone! I just built a gaming rig featuring an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU, a 5070Ti GPU, and 32GB of RAM. I'm using an air cooler—the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120. While gaming, I've noticed the CPU temperature spikes to 95 degrees Celsius, and sometimes even 97 degrees. During regular use, it sits around 50-52 degrees, which is fine. Limiting the framerate helps keep it around 80 degrees in menus, but once I'm in-game, it hits that limit again. Is this normal for demanding games like Helldivers 2? Should I be worried about these temperatures, or could there be an issue with my cooler setup? I've read that the CPU self-throttles at 95 degrees, so I wanted to get your thoughts on whether I need to make adjustments to prevent any overheating problems. Thanks for the help!

It sounds like there might be an issue with your cooler setup. The Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 should keep your CPU cooler than that, especially during gaming. I'd recommend checking if it’s mounted correctly and ensuring there’s adequate pressure. If all else fails, remount it and apply some fresh thermal paste. You shouldn’t be hitting 95 degrees under load with that cooler.
While CPUs do have thermal protections, running at 95C consistently isn’t ideal. It can lead to throttling and performance issues. Consider undervolting your CPU in the BIOS; I keep mine at 85C max which helps a lot. Also, don’t forget to check your cooler’s power if you’re using an AIO; otherwise, make sure the cooler is well-secured.
Yeah, even with Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) going, it shouldn’t be hitting those temps. Sounds like there’s a problem.
95-97C seems really high for your CPU while gaming. Have you checked your case airflow and ambient temperature? Sometimes it helps to undervolt the CPU for better thermal performance. If it continues, I’d suggest investigating cooler mounting issues—make sure that plastic film on the cooler is removed!
Also, what case are you using? It could be restricting airflow.
That temperature is concerning. Your CPU can throttle at 95 degrees, which means you'll see decreased performance if it stays that high. Definitely try remounting your cooler and replacing the thermal paste just to rule out any issues. If you didn’t leave the plastic on the cooler during installation, that's a win! Otherwise, keeping an eye on temperatures is key.
I’d remount it if I were you. A similar setup of mine runs around 60-65 degrees while gaming, and I somehow overclocked!
Totally agree, 95C is pretty high for that cooler! I’ve got a similar setup and I max out around 70C, so definitely look into remounting.
