I'm a beginner with AWS and am planning to host one or more WordPress-based e-commerce sites there. Is self-hosting WordPress on AWS a sensible choice, and what kind of monthly costs should I expect? I'd also appreciate advice on simpler alternatives, security, and which AWS services would be appropriate for a small or medium-sized business.

You can run WordPress on AWS, but managing it yourself is usually much more work than expected. You’re responsible for updates, backups, server security, plugins, monitoring, and recovery if something goes wrong. For a public e-commerce site, managed WordPress hosting is often a better strategic and financial choice unless you specifically need AWS flexibility.
Be especially careful with security. WordPress is frequently targeted because of its popularity, and vulnerable plugins or themes are common attack paths. Keep the core software and plugins updated, use strong authentication, limit administrator access, configure backups, add monitoring and a firewall, and test restoring backups before putting an online store into production.
For a small business, start with managed WordPress hosting or a simple Lightsail deployment rather than designing a full AWS environment. Full AWS infrastructure makes more sense when you have specific scaling, compliance, networking, or integration requirements. Otherwise, the administrative overhead can outweigh the benefits.
AWS works well technically, but the price depends heavily on the architecture. A basic Lightsail WordPress instance can start around $5–$10 per month and is much easier for a beginner than building everything with EC2, databases, load balancers, and multiple availability zones. A production setup with high availability and a managed database can quickly cost several hundred dollars per month.
