Is Intune a Good MDM Choice for macOS Devices?

The right choice depends on how much Apple-specific management you need. Some organizations move to Jamf because it’s easier to meet detailed Mac requirements and has more mature Apple-focused workflows. If the fleet is small and your needs are mostly standard policies and applications, Intune can be perfectly adequate.

There are still important gaps compared with more specialized MDM platforms. If you depend on advanced macOS packaging, bootstrap-style application deployment, or very granular Apple controls, Intune may feel limiting. I’d document the exact requirements first and test enrollment, software deployment, security policies, and recovery workflows before committing.

The enrollment process is mostly painless once it’s configured correctly, though there can be some awkward steps during the initial Mac setup. Company Portal and required profiles sometimes need to install before the user can continue. Features such as platform single sign-on and Kerberos support can be particularly useful in mixed Windows and Mac environments.

If you already have Intune included in your Microsoft licensing, it’s worth evaluating before paying for another MDM. It covers the basics well: configuration profiles, compliance policies, scripts, custom XML settings, and application deployment. Dedicated Apple-focused products usually provide deeper control, but Intune may be sufficient for a small or moderately complex Mac fleet.

Intune has improved a lot over the last year or two. Enrollment and the overall end-user experience are much better now, especially with Microsoft 365 integration, single sign-on, and related authentication features. It still has some quirks, but it’s a reasonable choice for managing Macs if your organization already uses Microsoft licensing.
