While trying to remove my graphics card, I pressed down on the PCIe slot's retention clip and twisted the card. I heard a click, and the clip moved back up, but the GPU still wouldn't come out. After trying to move the clip sideways for about 20 minutes, I used more force and ended up damaging or breaking the clip. The latch usually needs to stay released while you gently pull the card straight out. Don’t twist the GPU or apply heavy force; remove the case screw, support the card, and press the latch with a finger or a long, non-metallic tool while easing the card out. Take a clear photo of the damaged slot before powering on, since the exact damage determines whether it’s safe to use.
First, shut the system down completely and inspect the slot and the GPU connector for cracked plastic, lifted contacts, or other damage. A broken retention clip doesn’t necessarily stop the slot from working electrically, but the card may no longer be held securely. If the card sits fully level and the contacts are completely aligned, it might work, but secure it to the case and avoid moving the PC. If the slot itself is cracked or damaged, replace the motherboard rather than risk an intermittent connection.
