Is PCPartPicker a Safe Way to Plan and Buy PC Components?

I'm planning to build my first PC and keep seeing PCPartPicker recommended. I've never purchased computer parts through links from the site before, so I want to make sure I understand how trustworthy it is. Does PCPartPicker actually sell the components, or does it simply help choose compatible parts and compare prices from retailers such as Vuugo, Newegg, and ShopRBC? Are the stores it links to generally legitimate, and what should I watch for to avoid scams?

The site is generally trustworthy and has been around for many years, but its links don’t guarantee every seller or marketplace listing is perfect. Check the retailer’s name, return policy, shipping details, and seller information before ordering. On marketplaces, pay attention to whether the product is sold and fulfilled by the marketplace itself or by an unfamiliar third-party seller.

PCPartPicker itself isn’t a retailer. It’s a parts-list and compatibility tool that checks things like CPU and motherboard sockets, power requirements, storage connections, and other potential conflicts. It then shows prices and links you to the individual retailer, where the purchase actually happens.

PCPartPicker may receive referral commission when someone follows one of its purchase links, but that doesn’t mean it is selling the parts or hiding the retailer. You can use the site to build and check a list, then independently visit the retailer’s official website and verify the product, price, stock, and seller before paying.

It’s a good way to compare prices and narrow down compatible parts, but treat it as a research tool rather than a seal of approval for every store. Buying from established retailers such as Newegg can be reliable, though you should still review whether a specific item is being sold directly by the retailer or by a third party.
