I started saving for my first gaming PC before memory prices rose, so the build has become more expensive than expected. I can now afford a Ryzen 5 9600X paired with an RX 9070, but I could wait a few more months to save for a Ryzen 7 7800X3D instead. I'll mainly be gaming at 1440p, so would the 9600X be sufficient, or would the 7800X3D provide a meaningful improvement worth delaying the build?

The 9600X should be more than enough for an RX 9070 at 1440p. In most games at that resolution, the GPU will be the limiting factor rather than the CPU, so the difference from an X3D chip may be fairly small.
I’d build the 9600X system now rather than delaying for several months. It’s a strong modern CPU, and an RX 9070 paired with it should handle 1440p gaming very well. A lower-cost X3D option could also be worth considering if you play a lot of competitive games, but it isn’t necessary for a balanced build.
I’ve used a 9600X with a more powerful RX 9070 XT and the performance was excellent. Upgrading to an X3D processor later didn’t make a dramatic difference in everyday gaming.
