I built my PC in 2022 with a Ryzen 5 4600G because its integrated graphics let me postpone buying a dedicated GPU. I now have an RTX 5060 8GB, but I'm still using the 4600G and am considering an upgrade to either a Ryzen 5 5500X3D or Ryzen 7 5800X3D. DDR5 and SSD prices make moving to a newer platform less appealing, so I'm wondering whether staying on AM4 is still a sensible choice.
My current system is:
- Ryzen 5 4600G
- RTX 5060 8GB
- 16GB DDR4 (2x8GB)
- ASUS PRIME B450M-GAMING II
- 500W power supply
I'm planning to replace the PSU with a quality 650W unit. Do I also need to replace my B450 motherboard with a B550 board, or can the current motherboard handle one of these X3D processors? I'm also concerned about whether PCIe 3.0 will noticeably limit the graphics card or CPU upgrade.

Staying on AM4 is a perfectly reasonable budget upgrade. The 5500X3D should be a strong gaming improvement over the 4600G, while the 5800X3D is faster but often costs too much to justify with an RTX 5060. Your B450 board should be usable as long as it has the required BIOS update installed. Check ASUS’s CPU support list and update the BIOS before swapping processors if necessary.
Before buying the 5800X3D, compare its price with a newer-platform build. If the processor is reasonably priced, it can extend the life of your current system without replacing the motherboard and memory. If it costs close to a full platform upgrade, a cheaper AM4 X3D chip is the better value. The 5800X3D is not automatically the best choice just because it is the fastest AM4 gaming CPU.
The RTX 5060 will usually be the performance limit, especially at higher resolutions or settings, so an X3D CPU only makes a major difference in CPU-heavy games, competitive titles, or when targeting very high frame rates. PCIe 3.0 generally won’t cause a meaningful problem with this graphics card. A quality 650W PSU is sensible, and upgrading to 32GB of RAM would also be worthwhile if your budget allows.
If you happen to have access to one, a Ryzen 5 5600X3D can be an excellent value and may even be preferable to the 5500X3D. Availability is limited, though, so it’s not worth building your whole upgrade plan around finding one.
That chip probably won’t be available where I live, so I’ll likely have to choose between the more widely available options.
