I accidentally plugged my phone charger into a USB-C port on my laptop that is meant for data or audio rather than charging. The charger stopped working, and now I get no sound from either the built-in speakers or headphones. Is there anything I can try to restore the audio?

The laptop uses a separate proprietary charging connector, so the USB-C port I used is only for data and audio—not charging. The charger itself is now dead, and the laptop still has no audio after trying the restart.

If the laptop's other USB ports still work, an inexpensive USB audio adapter could provide a workaround for headphones or external speakers. If the built-in speakers and headphone jack both remain dead after restarting and reinstalling the audio driver, the motherboard's audio circuitry may have been damaged and would need professional repair.

A USB-C phone charger normally should not damage a laptop port because USB-C power delivery usually requires a negotiation before higher power is supplied. If the charger failed at the same time, though, there may have been an electrical fault or surge.

Try a full power reset first. Restart normally, then shut the laptop down completely, disconnect the power, hold the power button for about 30 seconds, and turn it back on. Also check that the correct playback device is selected and that the audio driver is still enabled.
