I currently have one 16GB DDR4 memory stick running in single-channel mode. It doesn't have a heat spreader, but my main question is whether I should buy a matching 16GB stick to reach 32GB and enable dual-channel operation, or sell the current stick and replace it with a 2x8GB kit that includes heat spreaders and RGB lighting. I'm a student on a tight budget, so performance and value matter more to me than appearance.

The lack of a heat spreader shouldn’t be a deciding factor unless you’re doing extreme overclocking. Basic DDR4 modules usually run fine without one, and inexpensive add-on heat spreaders are available if you really want the look. For a limited budget, put the money toward capacity and compatibility instead of RGB.
If you can’t find a reasonably priced matching 16GB stick, a 2x8GB kit is still a valid option, especially if 16GB is enough for what you do. Just keep in mind that moving to the kit won’t increase your total memory, so the 32GB upgrade is the better long-term choice for demanding games, multitasking, or heavier applications.
Buy another 16GB stick if you can find one with matching or very similar speed and timings. That gives you 32GB while also enabling dual-channel memory, which is generally better than replacing it with only 16GB total. Heat spreaders and RGB are mostly cosmetic for ordinary RAM use.
Try to match the existing stick’s speed, timings, and voltage as closely as possible. Ideally, use the same model, although mixing modules can still work if the specifications are compatible.
