Should I Build or Buy a Gaming PC With a £700 Budget?

I'm completely new to PCs and want to get one for around £700. I'm not sure whether building it myself or buying a pre-built system would be the better option. I'd mainly like good value and a computer capable of handling modern games, but I don't know much about components or how difficult building one would be. What would you recommend?

You don’t need to already be an expert to build one. A few detailed beginner guides can walk you through the process step by step, and the components are generally designed to fit together in obvious ways. Building is satisfying and often lets you get more performance for your money, but don’t rush it—check compatibility carefully and follow the instructions.

If you’re not especially interested in learning how PCs work, buying a used or well-priced pre-built machine may be less stressful. With a £700 limit, new pre-built systems can include compromises, so compare the exact processor, graphics card, memory, storage, and power supply rather than judging by the advertised gaming label. Also think about which games you want to play, since the ideal specifications depend heavily on that.

A used PC is probably the best value at this budget, especially with current memory and SSD prices. Look at reputable listings or take someone knowledgeable with you, and make sure you can test the system before paying. If you buy used, learning how to check the graphics card, processor, storage, temperatures, and overall condition is important.

Building can give you better value than a pre-built system, but you’ll need to do some research first. Learn what the processor, graphics card, memory, power supply, and storage each do, then use a parts compatibility checker to plan a build. Around £700 should be enough for an entry-level gaming PC aimed at 1080p and roughly 60 FPS in many games, though demanding titles may require reduced settings.
