I'm planning a platform upgrade from an i5-14400F, RTX 4060 Ti 8GB, and 32GB of slow DDR5-4800 CL40 memory. I mainly play CPU-heavy games such as BeamNG.drive, Teardown, and Gran Turismo 5/6 through PS3 emulation, where I'm experiencing stutters and frame drops. I'm considering a Ryzen 7 7800X3D for around €360 or a Ryzen 7 9800X3D for about €430, along with a micro-ATX motherboard costing roughly €150 and a dual-tower air cooler for around €30 or slightly more. I play at 1080p, so the GPU generally hasn't been a major limitation. Would the 9800X3D's extra performance, newer architecture, and easier cooling justify spending another €70, or would the 7800X3D be the better value and let me put the money toward something like a DAC or a future GPU upgrade?

I’d lean toward the 7800X3D and save the €70. The 9800X3D is roughly 10–12% faster in many workloads, but that won’t always translate into an obvious improvement, especially if your current GPU becomes the limit. The money could be saved for a stronger graphics card later, which would usually make a bigger difference outside of your most CPU-heavy games.
Consider how long you plan to keep the processor. If you normally upgrade every few years, the 7800X3D gives you excellent performance now and leaves the AM5 upgrade path open. If you want to buy once and keep the CPU until newer games genuinely require more performance, the 9800X3D’s extra speed and newer Zen 5 design make the premium more reasonable.
Don’t overlook the memory when changing platforms. Your DDR5-4800 CL40 kit is relatively slow and has high latency, so an AM5 gaming build would ideally use a decent 32GB DDR5-6000 kit with low timings. Make sure the motherboard supports the processor out of the box or can be updated easily, and choose a cooler with a proper AM5 mounting kit. With those parts sorted, both X3D chips should handle your games very well.
The 9800X3D is faster and tends to be easier to cool, but the real-world difference is fairly small for the extra €70. Since you’re using an RTX 4060 Ti at 1080p and mainly care about CPU-heavy games, either chip should be a substantial improvement. I’d choose the 9800X3D if you want to keep the CPU for many years and the additional cost doesn’t affect the rest of the build; otherwise, the 7800X3D is the better value.
At 1080p, the 8GB of VRAM shouldn’t be a major concern for those CPU-limited games. A future GPU upgrade can wait unless you start running into graphics settings or VRAM limitations.

I’d prefer to keep the CPU as long as possible, so having a little more headroom is appealing. I may still have the option of upgrading the AM5 platform later if newer processors remain compatible.
