Should I expand my DDR4 setup or jump to DDR5?

I'm currently using a Ryzen 7 5800X with 16GB of RAM on an AM4 motherboard. I'm considering upgrading to 32GB of DDR4, but I'm also wondering whether it makes more sense to move to a DDR5 platform instead. I understand that switching to DDR5 would require replacing the motherboard and CPU as well. Since I can test DDR4 memory in my current system but not DDR5, I'd appreciate opinions on which route makes the most sense for gaming and overall value.

It mostly comes down to your budget and whether the 5800X is still meeting your performance needs. DDR5 can offer better performance on a newer platform, but the improvement usually isn’t worth replacing a perfectly capable CPU just to gain newer memory. Upgrade the platform when you actually need more CPU performance.

Keep in mind that memory prices and future pricing are difficult to predict, so waiting for a specific timeframe may or may not pay off. If you need more capacity now, get a reliable 32GB DDR4 kit and continue using the AM4 system. Save the larger CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 upgrade for when your current setup is no longer fast enough.

That makes sense. Since I’m not currently unhappy with the 5800X, I’ll probably stay on AM4 and increase the RAM instead of paying for a complete platform upgrade.

If you’re happy with the Ryzen 7 5800X and your main issue is running out of memory, just add or replace your RAM with a 32GB DDR4 kit. Your AM4 motherboard can’t use DDR5, so moving to it means buying a new CPU, motherboard, and memory all at once.

That’s what I was leaning toward. I mainly wanted to see whether people thought a full platform change was worthwhile, but upgrading to 32GB of DDR4 seems like the more sensible option for now.
