Should I Upgrade My CPU and Motherboard or Stay on LGA1200?

I currently have an RTX 3060, an Intel i5-11400F, 28GB of DDR4 memory, and a 512GB SSD. My PC feels slow, and I'm getting lower-than-expected FPS in games, so I'm wondering whether the CPU is holding the system back. Since I'm using an LGA1200 motherboard, I was considering switching to an MSI B550M PRO-VDH WiFi with a Ryzen 7 5700X. Would that be a worthwhile upgrade, or is there a better option? If I do replace the motherboard and CPU, what parts and steps would I need to avoid problems?

Moving from an i5-11400F to a Ryzen 7 5700X would not be a particularly attractive upgrade. AM4 is an older platform, and you would have to replace the motherboard while still ending up on an aging socket. A used i9-11900 could be a simpler drop-in upgrade for your existing LGA1200 board, assuming the motherboard BIOS supports it, but the performance gain may still be modest for gaming. Before buying anything, check whether your games are actually CPU-limited, since an RTX 3060, mixed memory configuration, slow storage, temperatures, or background programs could also explain low FPS and sluggishness.

Would the i9-11900 be faster than the Ryzen 7 5700X?

The 5700X is generally a stronger all-around processor than the 11400F, but buying into AM4 now usually only makes sense if you can get the CPU and board very cheaply. For a larger, longer-lasting upgrade, it would be better to save for a newer platform rather than spending money on a small generational move. Also, 28GB of RAM suggests you may be mixing memory sticks, which can cause compatibility or performance issues. Make sure the modules are installed in the recommended slots and that they run in dual-channel mode.

If you replace the board and CPU, you may also need to reinstall or reactivate Windows, check for the correct motherboard drivers, and enable the memory profile in BIOS. Back up important files first, and confirm that your power supply has the required CPU and GPU connectors.
