USB Drive Is Detected but Doesn’t Appear in File Explorer

Right-click the disk and partition areas in Disk Management and check exactly how they’re displayed. The drive could be formatted with a filesystem Windows doesn’t support, such as one commonly used by macOS or Linux. In that case, the computer can detect the hardware but won’t assign a drive letter or show the files normally.

Being detected and reporting that it’s functioning only confirms that the USB bridge and drive electronics respond; it doesn’t guarantee the data or filesystem is intact. A drive that old may have mechanical wear or filesystem corruption. If the files are important, avoid repeated scans and don’t initialize, format, or run repair commands until you’ve made a recovery plan.

A greyed-out drive-letter option usually means Windows doesn’t see a valid, mountable partition. That doesn’t necessarily mean the physical drive is dead. In Disk Management, check the partition’s status—if it shows as RAW or unallocated, Windows may not recognize the old filesystem or partition table. Don’t format it if the data matters. Try a recovery tool such as TestDisk first, since it can sometimes detect older or unusual partition layouts without immediately modifying the disk.

The first thing to determine is whether the original partition is still visible. If it is, recovery software may be able to copy the files. If the disk is completely RAW and no partition structure can be found, the problem may be more serious. Also, an old drive can sometimes spin up and appear healthy while still having unreadable sectors, so treat any recovered data as a priority.
