I have an ASRock B450M Pro4 motherboard and was considering the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X because it seems affordable and powerful. I now realize the 7600X uses the AM5 socket, while my motherboard supports AM4. What similarly priced CPUs would offer comparable performance and work with my board?

If you can find one at a reasonable price, the Ryzen 5 5500X3D or 5600X3D can also be excellent gaming choices. Availability varies, though, so a regular Ryzen 5 5600 or Ryzen 7 5700X may make more sense if the X3D models are overpriced. For productivity workloads, consider the Ryzen 9 5900X or 5950X instead.
For gaming, the Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D are the strongest practical upgrades on AM4. The 5800X3D is roughly comparable to the 7600X in many games, while the 5700X3D is often the better value. Check your motherboard’s CPU support list and update the BIOS before installing one.
The Ryzen 5 7600X won’t work because it requires an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory. For an affordable AM4 upgrade, look at the Ryzen 5 5600, 5600X, or 5700X depending on local pricing. They’re good value for general use and gaming.
