What Happens If I Mix 2666MHz and 3200MHz DDR4 RAM?

I currently have 16GB of DDR4 RAM in a 2x8GB configuration, rated at 2666MHz. I'm considering adding another 2x8GB kit rated at 3200MHz, with the possibility of upgrading again later. How noticeable will the difference in speeds and timings be, and are there any stability concerns when mixing the two kits?

The performance difference between 2666MT/s and 3200MT/s is usually much smaller than the benefit of having more usable memory, especially if your current workload needs more than 16GB. Just keep in mind that a matched 2x16GB kit is generally more predictable than combining two separate kits.

Mixing RAM kits often works, but it isn’t guaranteed. Some systems run perfectly, while others become unstable even when the modules have similar specifications. If you get crashes or memory errors, test at a lower speed before assuming the RAM is defective.

Using XMP or DOCP with mismatched kits has a greater chance of causing instability. The system may fail to boot, crash, or produce random blue screens. If that happens, lower the memory speed and loosen the timings until it becomes stable. Running 32GB at 2666MT/s should generally be a reasonable expectation.

The mixed memory will usually run at the highest speed that all four sticks can reliably handle, which will most likely be around 2666MT/s rather than 3200MT/s. You can sometimes manually tune the speed and timings, but that means overclocking the older kit and may require trial and error.
