What Linux distro would work well on an old ASUS X510 with 4GB of RAM?

I have an older ASUS X510 with an AMD A12-9720P processor, integrated Radeon R7 graphics, and 4GB of RAM (3.87GB usable). I'd like to give it a second life with Linux. My main needs are checking Gmail or Outlook, browsing the web, and other light everyday tasks. I'm new to Linux, so what distribution would be a good fit, and is there any additional hardware information that would help determine the best choice?

If you want something lighter, MX Linux with Fluxbox could work and may sit around 600MB of RAM at idle. Fluxbox is very minimal, though, so it can feel less polished and may take some learning if you’re new to Linux.

antiX is another option if you want to minimize resource usage. It can run with very little memory and is still actively updated, but the interface is designed more for very old hardware than appearance. XFCE would probably be the nicer balance for email and browsing.

A distribution using the XFCE desktop should be a good starting point. It’s reasonably lightweight while still feeling like a normal modern desktop, and it may use roughly 1GB of RAM when idle. With only 4GB, keep the number of browser tabs and extensions under control.

That hardware should be capable of handling a lightweight Linux setup. One similar laptop ran well with a minimal installation and XFCE added afterward, including web browsing, email, video streaming, and even VPN use. You could also try Linux Mint with Cinnamon, although XFCE or another lighter desktop would leave more memory available for the browser.
