What should I upgrade first for better 1080p gaming and streaming?

My current PC has a Ryzen 5 4500, an RTX 4060, 16GB of RAM, and an AM4 motherboard whose exact model I still need to confirm. It used to run my games smoothly, but after sitting unused for a while, newer games are now performing noticeably worse and FPS is less stable. I mainly play at 1080p and would eventually like to record videos and stream with a friend. My budget is limited because I'm helping care for a family member, so I'd prefer to upgrade gradually, but I'm willing to save for a more worthwhile part if smaller upgrades would only need replacing later. What should I upgrade first, and what should I check to make sure the recent performance drop isn't caused by something like overheating, drivers, or a software issue?

The CPU is probably the main limitation here. The Ryzen 5 4500 has relatively little cache, so upgrading to a Ryzen 5 5600 or 5600X would give a noticeable improvement in CPU-heavy games while keeping your existing AM4 platform. Check your motherboard model and BIOS support before buying.

If you want to stay on AM4 for several more years, look for a good deal on a Ryzen 7 5700X3D or another compatible X3D chip. Those are more expensive than a 5600, but the extra cache can help with minimum FPS and demanding games. Make sure your motherboard and cooler can support the processor.

The RTX 4060 should be adequate for 1080p, and its hardware encoder can handle recording or streaming without putting everything on the CPU. I’d first confirm the motherboard, power supply, BIOS version, and temperatures, then save for a Ryzen 5 5600 as the sensible budget upgrade. A higher-end AM4 processor only makes sense if you plan to keep this platform for a long time.

Before spending money, check CPU and GPU temperatures, dust buildup, fan operation, background programs, power settings, and graphics drivers. Confirm that the RAM is running in dual-channel mode with its rated speed enabled, and check whether a recent game update or shader compilation is causing the slowdown. Also verify that the monitor cable is connected to the RTX 4060 rather than the motherboard.

Streaming and recording can also benefit from more memory. If your 16GB is running as two matching 8GB sticks, adding another identical kit may help, but only if the motherboard supports it reliably. Otherwise, replacing it with a matched 32GB kit is safer. I’d still prioritize the CPU after checking the basics.
