I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 5600X, RTX 3060, 32GB of DDR4-3200, and an MSI B550-A PRO motherboard with a 240Hz 1080p monitor. I use the PC for both work and gaming, including CS2, League of Legends, Minecraft, Overwatch, Rainbow Six Siege, Civilization, Forza, and F1.
My main concern is competitive gaming performance. I used to get well over 400 FPS in older Counter-Strike versions, but I'm now averaging around 160 FPS in CS2. I'd like to maintain high, consistent frame rates and ideally make better use of the 240Hz display without spending several thousand dollars on a new AM5 system.
Would upgrading to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D be the best move for this AM4 platform? Should I also replace the RTX 3060, or would it be enough for my games at 1080p? I'm willing to spend roughly $350 on the CPU and additional money on a GPU if that would keep the system capable for the next few years before a full platform upgrade.

For CS2 and similar esports games, the 3060 may still be perfectly usable, particularly with competitive settings. Upgrade the CPU first and check GPU utilization while playing. If the GPU is near 100% and you want higher settings or better performance in newer games, then consider a stronger card such as an RTX 5070, RTX 5070 Ti, RX 9070, or RX 9070 XT. Those would be sensible upper-range pairings for a 5800X3D without going excessively high-end on an older platform.
The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the obvious high-end upgrade for AM4, especially for CPU-heavy games such as CS2. It should provide a noticeable improvement in minimum FPS and frame-time consistency compared with the 5600X. Your B550 board should support it with a BIOS update, but check the CPU support list and update the BIOS before swapping processors if necessary.
That’s currently my leading option. I’m mainly unsure whether the RTX 3060 will become the limiting part afterward.
A 5800X3D paired with an RX 9070 XT would make a very strong AM4 gaming system, although that may be more GPU than you need for esports titles at 1080p. A less expensive graphics card would probably be enough unless you also want high settings and strong performance in newer, more demanding games. Check GPU usage, CPU usage, and per-core utilization in your actual games before choosing the card.
You may not need to replace anything immediately. A 5600X and RTX 3060 are still capable at 1080p, and lowering CPU-heavy settings can help in CS2. A 240Hz monitor doesn’t mean every game must run at 240 FPS, and spending several hundred dollars for a moderate improvement on a platform with no future CPU upgrades may not be the best value. If the system remains playable, saving for a later AM5 build could give you a more meaningful jump.
