What upgrades are practical for a 2020 Dell OptiPlex 5080?

I received a 2020 Dell OptiPlex 5080 from the school where I work, and it has been running the games I care about surprisingly well. However, its current graphics solution performs poorly when I try to record or stream, making the footage very choppy. I would like to upgrade the graphics card, or any other components that would help, but my budget is limited and buying a completely new PC is not realistic right now. What upgrades are possible, and what information should I check first?

If yours is the full-size Tower model, a modest graphics upgrade may be straightforward. Older low-power cards such as a GTX 1650 or GTX 1050 Ti were commonly used in similar systems, and newer slot-powered cards may also be options. The SFF and Micro models require low-profile cards, and the Micro version may not have a usable graphics expansion slot at all. Recording with hardware encoding could also help, but the CPU and current GPU will determine how much improvement you get.

Replacing the power supply can be complicated because of Dell's proprietary connectors, so an ordinary retail PSU may not be a direct replacement. Moving the components to another case is possible in some configurations, but it can create compatibility and mounting problems. For a tight budget, confirming that you have the Tower model and choosing a compatible low-power GPU is usually simpler than rebuilding the whole system.

The answer depends heavily on which version you have: Tower, Small Form Factor, or Micro. The Tower has the most room and generally uses a 360W power supply, while the smaller versions have tighter space and power limits. Check the exact case size, CPU, RAM, GPU, and power-supply rating, and ideally take a photo with the side panel removed before buying anything.

The power supply is usually the biggest obstacle in these systems. Dell often uses proprietary power connections, and the stock unit may not include the PCIe power cable required by many graphics cards. A low-power card that draws everything through the motherboard slot is the safest option. Depending on the case, something like an RTX 3050 6GB or another low-profile, slot-powered card may work, but you must verify clearance and compatibility first.

Open Windows System Information or the Task Manager performance tab and record the CPU, installed RAM, current GPU, system model, and power-supply wattage. Also measure the available card space and check whether the case requires a low-profile bracket. Without those details, it is impossible to recommend a specific card safely; do not assume that every OptiPlex 5080 accepts the same upgrades.
