I have a basic understanding of machine learning and want to develop the skills needed to work as an AI engineer. I'm unsure what to study next or how to organize my learning. What sequence would you recommend for learning the fundamentals, software engineering, deep learning, large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, AI agents, MLOps, and deployment? I'd also appreciate recommendations for courses or other learning resources, practical projects to build, and the tools and frameworks that are most useful in industry.

Put serious time into software engineering and API integration. Many AI engineering jobs involve connecting models to production systems rather than training models from scratch. Learn how to build reliable data pipelines, work with RAG and vector databases, expose services through APIs, and handle testing, monitoring, versioning, and deployment through MLOps. Most importantly, practice with real datasets and become comfortable owning the full pipeline—from data preparation to a working deployed application.

It may also be worth learning some logic design and basic computer hardware concepts. As specialized AI hardware becomes more common, understanding how computation works below the software layer could become a useful advantage.

Start with strong fundamentals rather than chasing every new AI trend. Build up your programming, data structures, math, machine learning concepts, and software engineering skills. A good way to turn that knowledge into something practical is to choose a project that genuinely interests you, research what it requires, and learn the missing pieces as you go. For example, you might try building a system that learns to play a classic game. Curiosity-driven projects help you develop useful skills while keeping the process manageable.
