I'm looking to improve performance in newer games. My graphics card is an RTX 4080 SUPER, but the rest of the system is older, so I'm wondering whether a CPU and RAM upgrade would be worthwhile. I can spend up to $1,000, though I'd prefer a cost-effective upgrade that provides a noticeable improvement rather than replacing everything unnecessarily.

- Ryzen 5 5600X
- ASUS TUF Gaming B550-PLUS motherboard
- RTX 4080 SUPER
- 16GB DDR4-2400 RAM in four 4GB sticks
- 1TB SATA SSD
- 1000W power supply
Would it make more sense to stay on AM4 with a faster CPU and 32GB of DDR4, or move to an AM5 platform with a new motherboard, DDR5 memory, and CPU?

I’d replace the 16GB kit regardless. Modern games benefit from 32GB, and DDR4-2400 is quite slow for a system with a 4080 SUPER. A Ryzen 5 5600X to a regular 5800X is usually too small an improvement to justify the money, so either keep the 5600X for now or go directly to a 5800X3D.
For a budget-conscious approach, start with 32GB of compatible RAM and check your frame rates and CPU usage in the games you play. If the 5600X is holding back the 4080 SUPER—especially at 1080p or high-refresh 1440p—then upgrade the CPU. At 4K, the difference may be smaller because the graphics card is more likely to be the limitation. Your power supply is more than sufficient, and the SATA SSD is worth replacing with an NVMe drive mainly for faster loading rather than higher gaming frame rates.
Before buying an expensive 5800X3D, compare its price with an AM5 bundle. A Ryzen 5 9600X or Ryzen 7 7800X3D, a B650-class motherboard, and 32GB of DDR5 can sometimes cost about the same as a 5800X3D alone. AM5 would give you a newer platform and a much better future upgrade path, while also allowing the 4080 SUPER to stretch its legs more in CPU-limited games.
The right choice depends heavily on local pricing. If the AM5 CPU, board, and memory bundle is only a little more expensive than the AM4 option, I’d choose AM5. If the bundle costs substantially more, 32GB of DDR4 plus a well-priced 5800X3D is still a sensible way to extend the current system.
That’s the key distinction: a standard 5800X is close enough to the 5600X in gaming that the upgrade often isn’t worthwhile. The extra cache on the 5800X3D is what makes the AM4 upgrade meaningful.
