I'm putting together a gaming PC for my son and haven't kept up with hardware for about five years. The budget is roughly £850–£1,000, and I'm happy to buy some components second-hand if that gives better value. I was considering an RTX 3080, but I'm open to other recommendations. He'll mainly be playing Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, and Rocket League for now, with the goal of handling 1440p gaming well and leaving room for more demanding games later. I'm unsure whether AM4 or AM5 makes more sense, especially with DDR5 prices, and would appreciate advice on the best parts to target.

For this budget, buying carefully from the used market can get you a very capable system. An AM4 build with a Ryzen 5 5600 or 5700X3D, 16–32GB of RAM, a B550 motherboard, and a used RX 6800 or RTX 3080 would be strong for 1440p. Make sure the power supply is a reputable 650–750W model, and don’t sacrifice too much on the case, cooling, or SSD.
Look for a complete used Ryzen system with at least a 500GB SSD and 16GB of RAM, then upgrade the graphics card and power supply if needed. Older Ryzen 3000 machines can still work, but I’d try to find a Ryzen 5000 or X3D setup instead if the prices are close. Collection-only listings can save quite a bit, and it’s worth waiting for a well-priced bundle rather than buying everything separately in a hurry.
Don’t assume an RTX 3080 is automatically the best choice. It’s still fast, but used cards can be power-hungry and may have been heavily used. Compare it with cards such as the RX 6800, RX 7800 XT, or newer equivalents, depending on local prices. AMD cards can offer excellent 1440p performance, while Nvidia may be preferable if features like DLSS, ray tracing, or CUDA matter. Whatever you choose, check the card’s condition and pair it with a quality PSU.
I’ve usually gone with Nvidia, but I’m open to AMD if the performance and value have improved. For now the priority is smooth 1440p gaming rather than ray tracing.
An X3D processor is worth considering if gaming is the priority. A Ryzen 7 5700X3D on AM4 gives excellent performance without the cost of DDR5, while a Ryzen 7 7800X3D or newer AM5 option offers a better upgrade path but may push the budget once the motherboard and memory are included. For the games listed, a 5700X3D paired with a good mid-to-high-end GPU should be more than enough.
