What’s the catch with these unusually cheap hard drives?

I found these hard drives being sold at a surprisingly low price through an online marketplace. The deal is tempting, but I'm concerned they may be used, refurbished, relabeled, or otherwise lower quality than advertised. If I decide to buy one, what should I check to verify its capacity, health, performance, and history?

These are reportedly 5900 RPM models, so they may be better suited to backups, bulk storage, or archival use than as a primary performance drive. Also compare the final delivered price with reputable retailers—similar-capacity drives may cost only a little more and offer much better accountability.

Check the drive’s SMART data as soon as it arrives. Pay particular attention to power-on hours, start/stop counts, reallocated sectors, pending sectors, and overall health. With a price this low, I’d assume it’s used or refurbished until testing proves otherwise.

Make sure the listing actually lets you place an order. Some marketplace listings show stock or fast delivery but don’t allow the drive to be purchased, possibly because the inventory is limited or stored locally. Confirm the exact model, warranty, seller rating, and return policy before paying.

There are reports suggesting these may be relabeled drives, so I’d be cautious. Run a full capacity test with a tool such as H2testw or F3, then do a complete read test and verify the SMART information with CrystalDiskInfo or smartmontools. Keep expectations low and don’t use it as the only copy of anything important.

The price isn’t dramatically below what comparable drives have cost in the past, but the current market is unusual and these particular variants can be difficult to find locally. I’d still want clear seller information and a return option before taking the risk.
