Which GPU makes the most sense for budget 1080p AAA gaming?

I'm putting together a budget gaming PC and mainly want to play demanding AAA games at 1080p. I've been looking at used graphics cards with 8GB of VRAM, but I'm wondering whether it's worth spending more on a 12GB or 16GB model for better longevity. I'd like to keep the card for several years, so what options offer the best balance of price, performance, and future-proofing?

If you can find one at a sensible price, a used RX 6700 XT is a strong choice because its performance and 12GB of VRAM should hold up well at 1080p. A used RTX 2080 Ti can also perform well, but pricing is often unreasonable, so check the actual market value carefully.

A regular RTX 2080 can still handle 1080p very well, although some newer AAA games may require reduced settings or upscaling.

Cards like the RTX 5060 or a 16GB alternative could work well, depending on local pricing. For keeping the card for several years, I’d prioritize at least 12GB of VRAM when possible rather than paying extra for features you may not use.

If your budget is tighter, an RX 6600, RTX 3060 Ti, or similar midrange card can still be a good 1080p choice. Just compare used prices and condition, since older cards may offer better value than entry-level new ones.

The RTX 3060 Ti served me well for years, but 8GB could become a limitation sooner in demanding games, especially if you want to use high textures.

For a new card, a 16GB option such as the RX 9060 XT would give you more breathing room for future games. It is worth considering if the price difference over an 8GB model is reasonable.

A used RTX 3080 10GB would deliver excellent 1080p performance, but it uses more power and may not be the best long-term value unless you find a particularly good deal. The final recommendation depends heavily on your budget, local prices, power supply, and whether you care about ray tracing or upscaling features.
