Why does my aim feel delayed after switching from a 12700K to a 9800X3D?

My aim felt extremely responsive with a Core i7-12700K and Radeon 9070 XT, and my performance and rank were improving. After switching to a Ryzen 7 9800X3D with an RTX 5080, I expected things to feel even better, but the game now feels less immediate. It is as if there is a layer of input delay or separation between my mouse movements and what happens on screen.

The system runs normally without crashes or other obvious problems. I have already tried BIOS updates, chipset and GPU driver updates, and various performance tweaks. The system has a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 32 GB of Kingston Fury DDR5, a B850 Aorus Elite motherboard, an ASRock 1000 W power supply, and an RTX 5080 Gaming Trio OC. I am seriously considering returning to my old setup if I cannot make this one feel right. What should I check?

I have noticed a similar sluggish feeling on several X3D-based systems, while Intel setups felt more immediate. A properly tuned Intel system can still perform extremely well in competitive games, so if you have already ruled out drivers, display settings, frame generation, USB behavior, and inconsistent frame times, returning to the setup that feels better is a reasonable choice.

That is what I am trying to determine. The new computer performs correctly on paper, but the older system felt much more connected in actual matches.

Start by checking the basics that can quietly add latency: your display resolution and refresh rate, whether frame generation or upscaling was enabled automatically, and whether the new GPU drivers were installed cleanly after removing the old ones. Those settings can make a system feel very different even when the average frame rate looks good.

The USB port may also be worth testing, especially if you use a high-polling-rate mouse. Try a motherboard port connected directly to the CPU rather than a hub or a port routed through another controller, then compare the feel with a lower polling rate as a troubleshooting step.

Some people report that certain AMD systems feel less smooth or more delayed to them than comparable Intel systems, particularly in competitive games. That is subjective and does not prove the processor is defective, but it may be worth comparing frame-time consistency, 1% lows, mouse polling behavior, and latency measurements instead of relying only on average FPS.
