Why Does WoW Drop to 20 FPS and Freeze During Large Raids?

I'm playing WoW at 150–200 FPS in dungeons and the open world, but performance collapses in 20-player mythic raids. During pulls and heavy mechanics, FPS fluctuates between roughly 15–30, the game micro-freezes, and sometimes abilities do not register properly. Lowering the graphics settings, disabling addons, checking temperatures, and verifying memory speed have not helped. Alt-tabbing can also cause the game to freeze and occasionally crash the graphics driver.

My system is an AMD Radeon 9070 XT, Ryzen 7 5700X3D, Asus Prime X570-P motherboard, 64GB of DDR4-3200 RAM, and SSD storage. Other games generally run well, although I have experienced some GPU or software crashes. Is the 5700X3D simply too old for stable raid performance, or does the freezing and driver crashing point to another issue? I'm considering a full system upgrade, possibly for future games such as GTA 6, but would prefer to fix the current problem if possible.

Since the game performs well in the open world and five-player content, lowering every setting may not change much: many raid settings mainly affect the GPU, while the busy parts are limited by the game’s main thread. A newer X3D processor might improve minimum FPS, but moving to a completely new GPU platform is unlikely to solve the raid issue by itself.

A newer system can still dip in raids. For example, even a high-end X3D processor paired with a 9070 XT may fall to around 60–70 FPS during particularly busy encounters, so some reduction is expected.

Large WoW raids can bottleneck heavily on the CPU, often around one main game thread. Even very modern processors can drop substantially when 20 players, spells, and mechanics are being processed. A 5700X3D should still be capable of playable raid performance, though, so the CPU limitation alone does not fully explain severe freezing, missed inputs, or graphics-driver crashes.

That’s my concern. I understand raids are CPU-heavy, but I’d be happy with a stable 60 FPS. Dropping into the 15–30 FPS range and freezing during mechanics feels worse than a normal CPU bottleneck.

The raid FPS limit may be normal for the engine, but repeated micro-freezes, alt-tab crashes, and driver failures suggest an additional software or stability problem. A clean graphics-driver installation, resetting WoW’s configuration and shader cache, testing without overlays, and checking Windows Event Viewer would be worthwhile before replacing the hardware. Also test windowed fullscreen versus exclusive fullscreen and temporarily disable browser, recording, and monitoring overlays.

I’ve already tested with addons disabled and all raid settings at minimum, but I haven’t ruled out driver or overlay problems completely. A clean driver and configuration reset seems more sensible than immediately buying a new rig.
