I bought an iPhone 17 Pro Max about five days ago, but the battery is lasting only around five hours of use. I expected it to last most of the day, so I'm worried something may be wrong. I also recently installed a new iOS update. Should I contact Apple Support or give the phone more time to settle?

A brand-new iPhone can use extra battery during the first week while it finishes setup, indexing photos and files, syncing accounts, and learning your usage habits. A major iOS update can temporarily increase background activity too, so five days may be too soon to judge the normal battery life.
The recent iOS update could explain some of the drain, especially if the phone is still completing background tasks. Check Settings > Battery to see which apps are using the most power, keep the phone updated, and monitor it for another few days. If the battery is still only lasting about five hours afterward, contact Apple Support for a diagnostic check.

Should I still have Apple check it, or should I wait a few more days first?
