Why won’t my Windows 11 SSD boot in a different PC?

I have an SSD with Windows 11 installed that runs normally in my laptop. However, when I move the same drive into a newly built PC, I get errors such as "Error reading disk" or "No boot device found." I've tried changing BIOS compatibility settings between UEFI and Legacy, but neither option works. What could prevent the new computer from detecting or booting from this SSD, and what should I check?

A Windows installation moved between very different hardware can sometimes boot because Windows includes many generic drivers, but it isn’t guaranteed. Different storage controllers, firmware settings, and hardware drivers can prevent startup. Even if you get it working, activating Windows again or reinstalling drivers may be necessary.

If the drive is detected, check that the system is using the same storage mode as the laptop, such as AHCI versus RAID, and that Windows Boot Manager for this SSD is first in the boot order. Windows 11 installations normally expect UEFI, GPT, and Secure Boot rather than Legacy or Compatibility mode.

Changing boot settings won’t help if the new PC cannot detect the drive at all. The BIOS drive list is the first thing to verify.

First confirm whether the drive is actually visible in the new computer’s BIOS. If it isn’t listed, check whether the drive is SATA or NVMe, whether the M.2 slot supports that type of drive, and whether the SATA cable, port, or power connection is working. Some M.2 slots only support SATA or only support NVMe.

If the SSD works in the laptop but not in the new PC, test another known-good drive in the new PC’s same port or slot. If that drive also fails, the problem is probably the motherboard slot, cabling, power, or BIOS configuration. For the most reliable setup, back up the files and perform a clean Windows installation on the new computer, then restore your data.
