My HP 250 G8 has become very sluggish on Windows 10, and I'd like to keep using it for office work for a few more years. I've installed Linux on a desktop before, but never on a laptop. Is this model generally well supported by Linux Mint, and are there any laptop-specific steps or BIOS settings I should know about?

The installation process is basically the same as on a desktop. Create a bootable USB, start the laptop from it, and choose the option to test Mint before installing. Check the Wi-Fi, touchpad, keyboard, audio, display brightness, suspend, and any other hardware you use. If everything works in the live environment, the installed system should be fine too.
Try the live USB for a while before committing to the installation. It lets you confirm that networking and the trackpad work without touching the internal drive. When you do install, keep the laptop connected to power and preferably use a wired network connection so updates and additional drivers can be downloaded reliably.
The HP 250 G8 is generally reported to work well with Linux, so Mint should be a reasonable choice. Before changing anything, back up your Windows files and make sure you have recovery media. HP’s UEFI settings can occasionally be confusing, but disabling Fast Startup in Windows and checking Secure Boot or boot-order settings usually gets things working if the USB does not appear.
If the laptop still has a mechanical hard drive, replacing it with an SSD will probably make the biggest performance difference. Mint can run on the existing drive, but an SSD combined with a clean installation should make everyday office tasks feel much faster. Tools such as Ventoy can also make preparing the installation USB convenient.
