I was using Antigravity, Android Studio, The Wolf Among Us, and Opera at the same time when Windows suddenly started behaving strangely. Programs and folders disappeared, and File Explorer reported that some paths did not exist. After restarting, Windows showed only a small selection of apps and the browser, making the laptop look freshly reset.
I later noticed that the game was still installed, and Adobe applications appeared to remain available through Creative Cloud even though I could not find them normally. In a panic, I reinstalled Quick Share, Creative Cloud, Antigravity, Android Studio, and PC Health Check, and I also deleted the game. Safe Mode still shows the same stripped-down desktop. I have important data on the laptop and want to know whether this is a temporary or damaged Windows profile, a storage problem, or actual data loss—and what I should do next without making recovery harder.

This may still be a damaged or temporary Windows profile rather than a full reset. Open Command Prompt and run `echo %USERPROFILE%`. If it points to a folder such as `C:UsersTEMP`, `TEMP.000`, or another unexpected profile, Windows is showing you a blank temporary account. Also check `C:Users` for your original username folder. Do not delete, move, or rename anything there yet.
If the original folder exists, stop reinstalling programs and avoid repeated reboots. Back up the important files from that folder to an external drive if you can access them. You can then try one normal restart, System Restore, or repair the affected profile. Registry fixes involving `ProfileList` can restore a profile, but they should only be attempted after exporting the key and confirming the correct profile path.
The fact that some applications still appear installed through Creative Cloud suggests the programs may not actually have been removed. Windows could be loading a different profile, failing to mount the normal profile, or having trouble reading the drive. Look in `C:Users` and compare the sizes and modification dates of the folders. If your original folder is present, your documents may still be intact even though the desktop and Start menu look empty.
Check free space and the drive's health, but avoid cleanup tools, reinstalling Windows, formatting, or restoring from a backup until you know where the original data is. If the original user folder is missing or the drive is making unusual noises, shut the laptop down and use a professional recovery service or a read-only recovery process instead of continuing to use it.
Since you deleted the game and installed other software, further writes can reduce the chances of recovering deleted files. Stop using the laptop for anything unnecessary and copy any accessible personal files to another drive. If the data is not in the normal user folder or a backup, recovery software should be run from a separate bootable drive, saving recovered files to a different drive—not the laptop's system drive.
Before assuming everything is gone, check `C:UsersDesktop`, `Documents`, `Downloads`, and `AppData`. Installed applications can disappear from shortcuts or menus while their files remain on disk, so the visible desktop is not reliable evidence that the data was erased.
I checked Safe Mode and the same reduced desktop appears. I also reinstalled several programs before realizing this might be a profile problem, so I am mainly worried about overwriting important files. The original user folder and the exact profile path seem to be the next things I need to verify.
