I have a roughly five-year-old prebuilt PC that I bought during the GPU shortage. It currently has a Ryzen 7 5800X, an RTX 3070, and 3200 MHz CL22 DDR4 memory. In Fortnite, especially while building in Creative, I usually see around 190–230 FPS on the in-game counter, but I'm aiming for a more stable 240 FPS. Would upgrading to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D noticeably improve my average FPS and 1% lows, or would it make more sense to move to an AM5 platform? Fortnite is the only game I currently play that seems to struggle with 240 FPS, although I'm also unsure how CS2 would perform at native resolution.

Try Performance Mode with low settings and keep view distance as high as you need. A 5800X3D paired with a card around RTX 3070 performance can reach considerably higher frame rates in that setup, but DX11 or DX12 at higher settings will be more demanding. Test your current system with the same settings first before deciding.
Check GPU usage while playing with an unlocked frame rate. If the GPU is near 95–100%, a faster CPU probably won’t add much average FPS; it may only improve dips. If GPU usage is well below that, the 5800X3D could push your averages and lows higher. Also check whether Fortnite is using Performance Mode, since that can make a large difference.
An upgrade to the 5800X3D is much cheaper and simpler than moving to AM5 because you can keep your motherboard and memory. AM5 would mean buying a new CPU, board, and DDR5 RAM. For one game, I’d only consider AM5 if you want a broader platform upgrade rather than just improving Fortnite performance.
The 5800X3D can help if your CPU is the limiting factor. Its extra 3D V-Cache usually improves frame-time consistency and 1% lows, which can make high-refresh gameplay feel smoother. The average FPS increase depends heavily on your settings and whether the RTX 3070 is already being fully utilized.
The 190–230 FPS you’re seeing is already quite good. Unless you have a monitor above 240 Hz or the dips are visibly bothering you, replacing the hardware may not provide much noticeable benefit.
