I recently upgraded to a high-end gaming PC with a Ryzen 9 9950X3D, Radeon 9070 XT, 32GB of RAM, and an AIO cooler. My current motherboard is an MSI B650M Pro, and I'm wondering whether moving to an X870 Tomahawk would provide any noticeable gaming or general performance benefits. I mostly game and stream, and my current system already delivers very high frame rates. I'm also curious whether the newer board would offer substantially better BIOS controls, overclocking options, storage support, or anything else that would justify the cost.

For gaming, upgrading would mostly be spending money for features rather than extra FPS. PCIe 5.0 support on a newer board is unlikely to help current graphics cards in a noticeable way, and a good B650 board is already sufficient for most systems. Unless you need more storage slots, extra connectivity, or a specific feature, your current setup sounds more than capable.
The main thing to check with a 9950X3D is whether the board’s VRMs and BIOS support are adequate. That depends more on the specific motherboard design than on whether it uses B650 or X870. If temperatures and power delivery are fine, there’s no urgent reason to replace it. A fan near the VRM area can help airflow, but it doesn’t turn a weaker VRM design into a stronger one.
If your current board is stable and has the features you need, you probably won’t see a meaningful performance increase from switching. A higher-end board may offer more M.2 slots, stronger power delivery, additional connectivity, and more expansion options, but the chipset itself won’t make games run faster. Better overclocking controls are possible, though the practical difference may be small.
I mainly game and stream, and I’m already getting around 300 FPS in competitive titles and roughly 130–150 FPS in demanding games at ultra settings. Since my monitor is 300Hz, it sounds like I’m not really missing anything important right now.
