Advice for Upgrading CPU and Motherboard for Steam OS

I've run into a bit of a problem with my system—I think the liquid metal thermal paste did something as it's time for a new CPU and likely a new motherboard. My goal is pretty straightforward; I want to ensure my GPU isn't the bottleneck in my setup. I plan to keep most of my existing parts, though I might change the case. I haven't used this system in over a year after upgrading to Windows 11, and it was more hassle than enjoyable. I was perfectly fine just using my Surface Pro.

I really want to connect this rig to my TV and use it as a replacement for my Xbox. Honestly, my disdain for Windows has grown, and I prefer using my phone or my Surface Pro only when necessary. I've become quite fond of the Steam Deck, especially its user interface and operating system.

I intend to install Bazzite, Steam OS, or another gaming-focused OS that's compatible with controllers and dive into the Linux world. However, I'm getting overwhelmed trying to find a motherboard and a CPU that will work well with these operating systems.

Here's my current setup:
- **Motherboard:** ASRock Z370 Killer SLI/ac LGA 1151 (300 Series)
- **CPU:** Intel Core i5-8600K Processor (overclocked to 5GHz)
- **CPU Cooler:** ARCTIC Liquid Freezer 240
- **RAM:** 32GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000
- **GPU:** Sapphire Radeon Nitro+ RX 590 8GB
- **Power Supply:** Seasonic FOCUS GX-650
- **Storage:** XPG GAMMIX 256GB SSD, MOVE SPEED 2TB SSD, KingSpec 1TB SSD, and a Silicon Power 240GB SSD for emulation and ROMs.
- **Case:** Fractal Design Focus G ATX Mid Tower

In summary, I'm looking for recommendations for a CPU and motherboard that are compatible with Steam OS and won't hold back my GPU performance.

It sounds like you're ready for an upgrade! For a motherboard, look for something like the MSI B450 or B550 motherboards; they're solid options for compatibility with Steam OS and should work great with your current GPU. Pair it with an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X CPU; it's strong enough to avoid bottlenecks and is pretty efficient. Just make sure the motherboard has enough USB ports if you want to connect controllers! Good luck with your build!

I've heard good things about the Ryzen series too, but did you consider Intel's new line-up? They’ve been recently well-optimized for gaming.

If you're set on keeping your GPU and avoiding bottlenecks, definitely check out the Intel Core i5-11600K - it's a great CPU that should work well with Steam OS. For motherboards, an ASRock or ASUS Z590 could be a fit, depending on your budget. Remember to double-check compatibility with your RAM and the OS you want to install!

Thanks for the tip! I’ll look at those specs. Are there specific features I should prioritize in the motherboard?
