Advice Needed for Building a Gaming PC for My Son

I'm looking for guidance on creating a gaming PC for my 16-year-old son, Ayden. He wants it primarily to play games online with his friends, focusing on titles like Fortnite, GTA V (especially with mods), and Roblox. He found a potential build on TikTok that costs around £500, but before I proceed, I'd really appreciate some feedback from more experienced builders to ensure this setup will meet his gaming needs and to check for compatibility or value issues. Here's the suggested build:

- **Motherboard**: ASUS PRIME B450M-A II (Micro-ATX, AMD B450, AM4)
- **CPU**: AMD Ryzen 5 8500G Processor
- **RAM**: Lexar ARES RGB DDR4 16GB Kit (2x8GB) 3866 MHz
- **GPU**: ASRock Radeon RX 6500 XT Phantom Gaming 4GB OC GDDR6
- **Storage**: Patriot P320 512GB NVMe PCIe Gen 3x4 M.2 SSD
- **PSU**: MSI MAG A550BN UK PSU – 550W

I'm concerned about its suitability for GTA V with mods, potential compatibility issues, whether any components might be overkill or underpowered, and if there are better budget alternatives. It's been a while since I last built a PC, so any advice would be greatly appreciated to steer Ayden clear of relying on TikTok recommendations!

You should definitely reconsider this build. The AMD Ryzen 5 8500G CPU is actually incompatible with the B450 motherboard since it's an AM5 processor. For a solid alternative, go for a Ryzen 5 5600 or something on the AM4 platform; those would pair much better. Also, instead of the RX 6500 XT, check out the RTX 2060 or 3060 for improved gaming performance. Don't worry about the integrated graphics since you are getting a dedicated GPU, and look for something used to save money if you can!

I agree, going with a used setup can give you so much more bang for your buck! Plus, newer parts can be a waste at this budget.

For the budget of £500, I really think you're better off looking for a used PC or parts. The prices of new components are a bit steep right now, and you might end up with a much weaker build. Definitely look into used Ryzen 3600 or 5600 with a decent GPU like the GTX 1660 or something similar. And remember, you will fill that 512GB SSD super quickly – aim for at least 1TB to handle games and storage better.

For sure, a larger SSD is a must! I filled my 512GB in no time with just a couple of games.

Honestly, the suggested build is not great value. The CPU is a bit unneeded with a dedicated GPU, and the RAM could be upgraded to CL16 or CL18 at the same speed. Also, make sure to grab a quality GPU; the current one won't deliver the performance necessary for gaming, especially in GTA V with mods. A 6600 or 6700 would be much better options. If you're open to a slightly higher budget, it could make a big difference!

Yeah, with such demanding games, investing a little more upfront is worth it in the long run!
