Hey everyone! I'm getting ready to build a new PC and I'm considering these parts: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KjhXKq. I'm torn between the MSI B850M Mortar and an ASUS motherboard. I lean towards ASUS mainly because I'm familiar with their branding and logo when starting up, but I'm not fully committed to it. My goal is to go for a smaller build since my current setup is way too bulky. I'm worried about GPU clearance on the second slot or air cooler clearance if I opt for the MSI board.
This build will primarily be for gaming, and I want to make it as future-proof as possible with room for upgrades down the line. I've noticed a lot of builds have fans under the GPU, so I'm curious if I should follow that trend for better airflow. If not, is having three case fans (two on top and one at the back) enough? Are any 3-packs of case fans acceptable? I haven't purchased anything yet, hoping to catch some good deals during Black Friday or the holiday sales.
I apologize if my formatting is a bit off; I'm on mobile. I'm not a PC expert at all, so I welcome all feedback, tips, and advice. Thank you in advance!

If you're unsure about getting a PCIe 5 SSD, they don't really provide much advantage for general users. Unless you're transferring super large files between two Gen 5 SSDs, you won't notice a difference compared to Gen 4. Also, consider getting a power supply that comes with a 12VHPWR cable to keep things modern. Just a heads up, Black Friday deals for PC parts aren't usually amazing, so keep that in mind!
I have a few suggestions for your build:
- **CPU Cooler**: Swap out the Peerless Assassin 120 SE for the Phantom Spirit 120 SE. They are similarly priced and the Phantom Spirit tends to perform a bit better.
- **SSD**: Instead of a Gen 5 SSD like the Crucial T700, go for the Samsung 990 Evo Plus. The differences are negligible for most users unless you're doing specific tasks that demand PCIe 5.
- **PSU**: Transition from the Cooler Master V850 SFX Gold to the Montech Century II 850W. It fits nicely without needing an SFX PSU, making your build easier.
About airflow, your case can hold a few fans, but remember to check the space when placing your GPU. If you’re putting the Asus motherboard in, it might limit the space you have for the fans. You could consider placing a rear exhaust fan and a couple of top exhausts to help with airflow, since the setup can get a bit toasty without them. Just keep an eye on temperatures, especially when gaming.
