Hey everyone! I'm looking for some guidance on upgrading my gaming PC, as I'm not very knowledgeable about hardware. Here's my current setup:
- **CPU**: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X
- **GPU**: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti
- **RAM**: 2 x 8 GB DDR4-2400
- **Motherboard**: B450M PRO-VDH PLUS
- **SSD**: 970 EVO Plus 500GB
Right now, I'm getting around 60-80 FPS on low settings in some games, but I'd really like to either hit 144 FPS on low settings or maintain stable 60-80 FPS with better graphics. I'm considering the following upgrades:
- **CPU**: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
- **GPU**: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060
- **RAM**: 2 x 16 GB DDR4-3200
- **Motherboard**: Keep my current one if possible
- **SSD**: No changes needed
I usually uninstall games I'm not playing, so I don't think I need a bigger SSD for now. I'm also contemplating AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D, and Intel Core i7-14700K, but I'm uncertain if the price increase justifies the performance gain. I've noted that DDR5 RAM is better, but I believe that would require a new motherboard. Is switching to DDR5 worth it, and what other changes should I consider? Also, will any of my chosen components be incompatible?

Just so you know:
1. You can’t pair the 7800X3D with DDR4 RAM.
2. You'll need a new motherboard for the 7000 AMD or any Intel upgrades.
3. If you wanna keep your current board, consider the 5700X3D or 5800X3D.
4. A 7800X3D is probably overkill for a 5060 anyway.
5. If you're on a budget, AMD's RX 9060 XT 16GB is great too, but for Nvidia, the 5060 Ti 16GB is solid.
And yeah, steer clear of 8GB VRAM for the future!
You definitely can't mix DDR4 with an AM5 motherboard, so you'd need DDR5 for that upgrade. With DDR5 prices being pretty high now, it might not be worth the hassle. You could consider going with Intel as well — some of their options still work with DDR4. Just keep in mind if you want an AM5 CPU, you'll need both a new motherboard and RAM!
Hey! Just a heads-up, the 7800X3D requires an AM5 socket, and your current motherboard is AM4. So, if you're set on that CPU, you'll need a new motherboard too. If you're looking for a solid upgrade without changing too much, check out the Ryzen 5000 series, especially the X3D variants. They should work nicely with your current setup!
Oh, I didn’t realize that! Thanks for the tip!
You're on the AM4 platform, which supports Ryzen 5000 but you'll need to switch to AM5 for the newer chips. If you're after 144 FPS, I’d recommend sticking with a 5600 or 5600X since these will give you a solid performance boost. For your GPU, instead of the RTX 5060, check out the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB or RX 9060 XT 16GB — 8GB VRAM might limit you down the line!
Thanks! I’ll keep the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB in mind!

I didn't know those CPUs needed an AM5 motherboard. I’ll check out hardware store prices for AM4 vs AM5!
