Advice Needed for Upgrading My PC for University

I'm looking to upgrade my old PC as I prepare to enter my fourth year of university. I've been using the same setup since high school and I want to ensure I can run demanding, modded games like Stellaris, Skyrim, Satisfactory, and Minecraft at high visual quality. Here are my current specs:

* CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 @ 3.2 GHz
* GPU: RX 590 Fatboy OC+ (8 GB)
* RAM: 2x8 GB DDR4 - 3000MHz
* Motherboard: GIGABYTE A320M-S2H-CF
* PSU: 550 W (integrated into my Corsair Carbide Spec-05 case)

My main goals are to have a quiet and cool system that will last for the next 2-3 years. I have a hard budget cap of $1500, and I'm open to buying new or used parts except for the GPU, which I want to buy new to avoid potentially worn components from mining rigs. Given my current setup, should I consider upgrading individual components, or is it better to do a complete rebuild? If an upgrade is possible, which part should I start with? Thanks for your help!

Going for a complete rebuild might be the most sensible choice here. If you’re aiming for 1440p, modern specs will definitely enhance your gaming experience. You could maybe look for prebuilt options as they might fit your budget nicely. But if you want to upgrade, definitely consider a 5000 series CPU—either the 5700X3D for the best performance or a 5600X3D for a good balance. Just remember, you'll likely need a new PSU as well, since your current 550W won't cut it with any modern GPU.

Totally agree! For gaming, a better GPU is crucial. Look into options like the RTX 3060 for performance without breaking the bank. These upgrades might help you maintain solid medium-high settings on the games you love.

I'd recommend looking at options for refurbished PCs online. Places like eBay often have offers that can get you a decent setup for under a grand. You might find something solid and still have cash left over for upgrades like RAM or extra SSD storage later on. Your current PC isn't worth much, but keeping it as a backup wouldn't hurt either.

For sure! But if you do want to upgrade, I’d suggest starting with the GPU, as that should make the most noticeable difference in your gaming experience.

Honestly, if you're close to a Micro Center, it’s worth checking out their bundle deals. They often have promotions that can save you a ton. As for your RAM, while 16GB is sufficient for most gaming, upgrading to 32GB might future-proof your PC, especially since you're into modded games.

Oh, that's a great point! If you're looking for performance, consider going for slightly faster RAM too—like 3200 or 3600 MHz. It could give you that extra edge in gaming.
