Advice on Transitioning from Learning Algorithms to Game Development

Hey everyone! I'm aspiring to be a game developer and for the past couple of months, I've been focusing on a roadmap covering data structures and algorithms. I wanted to grasp the logic behind these concepts thoroughly before diving into game development. I've been able to use many of these algorithms in my game design projects where they seemed relevant, and I've just wrapped up the topic of Longest Common Subsequence in dynamic programming.

Now, I'm curious about what steps to take next. Should I continue practicing by applying all these algorithms and object-oriented programming concepts in game systems until I'm completely comfortable, or should I just jump right into creating games? I'm a bit torn since I worry my first projects might turn out messy if I don't have enough practice. My goal is to find effective solutions without overcomplicating things. I'd appreciate any advice you can offer!

If you've gotten through data structures and algorithms, creating a game should feel like a nice change of pace after that hard work. Sure, your first project will have its share of messiness, but that's all part of the learning process!

I suggest jumping into building something! Classic games like Pong, Snake, or Asteroids can be great starting points. If you’re looking for even simpler projects, try Tic-Tac-Toe, Blackjack, or Checkers to get your feet wet.

It’s awesome that you’re building a strong foundation with data structures and algorithms! Are you self-taught or in college? I think having that knowledge will really pay off. Just keep in mind, today’s job market can be tough without a degree. Make sure to build connections, upload your work to GitHub, and maybe consider creating a profile website as your skills progress.

You should definitely be making games as you learn! Applying what you know is the best way to solidify those concepts and discover what you still need to learn.
