Am I Being Scammed by McAfee or is My Mac Really at Risk?

Hey everyone, I'm feeling pretty anxious about something that happened while I was trying to stream a show for free. I know, I know, that was a poor decision. So, McAfee popped up and warned me the site was sketchy, so I exited. But then I got a notification from Safari saying something related to Russia was happening. I opened the notification, which led me to a McAfee scan that told me my protection had expired and urged me to renew my subscription. I might have even clicked something I shouldn't have. I'm worried about my sensitive info on my new Mac. Is this a scam from McAfee, or do I genuinely need to take action? What should I do next?

It sounds like you might have stumbled upon a common scam tactic. Sometimes, these pop-ups are designed to scare you into renewing subscriptions or downloading malware disguised as security software. Since you mentioned you were trying to stream something illegally, it could be that the site you're on is part of the problem. I'd recommend running a full scan of your Mac using a trusted antivirus program and considering changing your passwords just to be safe. Don't ignore those notifications though!

Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it. I definitely want to make sure I'm protected. Should I avoid using that streaming site again?

McAfee does have a reputation for pushing users to renew subscriptions when they don't really need to. Make sure you don’t click on any of the pop-ups from Safari without verifying them first. You might want to install a different antivirus or do a clean install to ensure your system is malware-free. And yeah, stay away from those risky streaming sites in the future!

Good tips! I had similar issues after visiting a sketchy site. Using a reputable VPN also helps keep you safe while streaming.
