Are Claude Code and Claude.ai Usage Limits Really Separate?

I've been looking into the usage limits for Claude Code and Claude.ai, and according to the documentation, they should share the same limits. However, I've noticed an odd pattern: after reaching my limit on Claude Code, I was still able to interact with Claude Opus through the web interface multiple times without issue. I even received a notification indicating a different reset time for the limits. Has anyone else experienced something similar, or can confirm whether the limits are indeed shared?

I think there might be some latency between the limits, but I haven't personally run into this issue before. It could be worth keeping an eye on.

I doubt it's just latency; I've noticed that the rate limits for the two actually reset at different times.

I've had the same issue! Even after hitting the rate limit on Claude Code, I was still able to use the desktop interface without problems.

Yep, same here! I could still chat with the Claude bot after hitting my limit on Claude Code.

Are you configuring Claude Code to use Opus for your total usage? By default, it only uses Opus for 50% of your limit before switching to Sonnet. This could affect how you’re seeing the limits.
