Are there any web-based SMS services that don’t require a smartphone?

I'm thinking about switching away from my smartphone, but I still want to be able to send and receive texts. Most of my texting happens on my laptop after I paired it with my Android, so I'm curious if there's a service I can use that lets me text online without needing a phone. Ideally, I just want something straightforward where I can log in, send or receive texts, and log out. I'm not looking to make calls or persuade everyone I know to use another messaging app.

You might want to check out Google Voice! It allows you to send and receive texts through their website, and it gives you a separate number as well. After the initial setup on your phone, you won’t need it anymore.

I looked at their docs, and I think that’s right! I’ll keep searching for alternatives that aren’t Google, but thanks!

If security is a concern for you, Element could be a good fit. It’s user-friendly and has fantastic encryption, which might be what you're looking for.
