Best Lightweight Linux Alternatives for an Old PC

I'm trying to revive an old PC that's been struggling with Windows. It takes over 10 minutes to boot and frequently freezes during updates. Currently, it's a Windows 10 machine cluttered with features that aren't necessary. The PC is primarily used for Facebook and checking email, but I'm looking to completely overhaul it since we can't afford an upgrade right now. Here are the specs: AMD A3400 CPU, 8GB DDR3 RAM, and onboard graphics. I'm interested in lightweight operating systems similar to Linux Mint but unsure what's best given the age of the hardware.

I think Linux Mint with the XFCE environment would run fine on that setup. It's lightweight and user-friendly, which is perfect for simple tasks like checking email and social media.

If you’re okay with experimenting, even a newer distro like Tumbleweed can perform well. Just use XFCE to keep it lightweight.

I’ve heard LXQT is the successor to XFCE and can work well on these specs too. But with 8GB of RAM, you could also run KDE Plasma for a nicer interface. It really enhances the user experience. Debian is another option that might save some resources.

You should be good with Mint. Even with an older HDD, it should work, although the boot times might still be a bit slow. If you want something snappier, try distros with XFCE.

Honestly, you might want to consider Ubuntu or Mint with MATE or Cinnamon. But if you really want to maximize performance, go for a distro with XFCE.
