Best Lightweight Linux Distro for an Old Laptop for My Kid?

I'm looking for a lightweight Linux distribution suitable for an old eMachines laptop (from 2010) that has a 900 MHz Intel Celeron processor, 2 GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 160 GB HDD. Currently, it runs Windows 7, but it's really slow. I want to set it up for my 7-year-old daughter, who has some experience with both Windows and an iPad. The primary uses will be video calls and browsing for educational purposes like homework and YouTube. I'm also planning to get a cheap USB webcam compatible with Linux since the laptop doesn't have one. Any recommendations for an easy-to-use distro that won't break or crash easily would be greatly appreciated!

I suggest trying MX Linux or AntiX. They have lighter desktop environments that run better on older hardware. MX uses about 1.6-1.8 GB of RAM, so it might just fit your needs. Also, consider options like Puppy Linux or Linux Mint with XFCE for better usability. You can run them live from a USB stick to see how they perform before installation.

I've had decent experiences with MX Linux on older machines. It’s user-friendly and should work fine for educational purposes.

If you're set on Linux, check out Q4OS, which is designed for low-spec hardware. It can be very lightweight and user-friendly for kids. Just remember, whatever you choose, keep the software updated and set up regular backups so your daughter doesn't lose important files.

You might want to test out Mx Linux with Fluxbox; I heard it runs quite smoothly on low-end systems. It’s promising for something like browsing and casual use, just ensure to use a lightweight browser.

If you're okay with sticking with Windows, I would recommend upgrading to Windows 10, but disable unnecessary animations and use Edge for browsing. It might be more manageable for someone who isn't particularly tech-savvy, given that you won't be around to help out every time.

Windows 10 might be a stretch with only 2 GB of RAM. Just keep that in mind!

With only 2 GB of RAM, running a modern web browser might be quite difficult. Some lightweight distributions like Lubuntu could work, but I wouldn't expect smooth performance—especially with video calls and YouTube. Consider creating a large swap partition to help manage that RAM. If you can upgrade the RAM to 4 GB, that would significantly improve your experience!

Definitely look into upgrading the RAM if the laptop supports it. It can make a world of difference in performance!
