Hey everyone! I'm an advanced Windows user with several years of experience in IT, both in professional and server environments. I'm looking to transition to Linux for my everyday use. My main reasons for this switch are to enhance my confidentiality and support the free and open-source software (FOSS) philosophy.
Here are my main requirements:
1. **Gaming compatibility:** I enjoy gaming, so I need wide support for games, launchers, and emulators. I have high-end NVIDIA hardware and need access to the proprietary NVIDIA drivers, which I can accept as a minor exception.
2. **FOSS-aligned distribution:** I prefer a distribution from a company or community that values the FOSS philosophy primarily but can tolerate a few exceptions.
3. **Stable updates:** I'm concerned about update issues I've faced on Windows, so I need consistent and reliable update behavior.
I'm considering several distributions, including Linux Mint, Zorin OS, MX Linux, Pop!_OS, Solus, and openSUSE. Could you share your thoughts on which of these would best meet my needs? I appreciate any insights or experiences you can offer and I'm happy to provide more details if needed. Thanks in advance for your help!

You should definitely check out CachyOS! It feels super responsive and robust, especially if you're coming from a Windows background. The experience is smooth across apps and gaming. Plus, for gaming, I recommend also considering ‘rolling’ release distros like Arch for the most up-to-date drivers and kernels, but it does require some learning. Just start with a VM to try it out!
If gaming is a priority, consider Bazzite as it’s tailored for gamers. Most distros can run games reasonably well, but Bazzite includes extra features specifically for gaming. My take on your list: Mint is stable but may be outdated; Zorin has limited community support; MX Linux is quirky; Pop!_OS has potential with its upcoming release but I’d avoid it right now; Solus is also a lesser-known distro. I’d definitely put my weight behind Pop!_OS from your options.
I’d recommend Mint, Zorin, or Solus. Solus is a rolling release, which is stable but can be more cutting-edge, while Mint is my top pick for stability. Just be aware that Mint uses X11 instead of Wayland. Zorin is user-friendly for former Windows users, but it can lag behind with updates since it's based on Ubuntu LTS. Avoid Pop!_OS for now since its new desktop environment is in beta, and MX Linux is fine if you like XFCE but might feel a bit quirky. Overall, stick with Debian/Ubuntu distros for a smoother experience!

I totally agree! CachyOS has been great for me too. It's especially good for high-end hardware users.
