Best Practices for Managing Domains, Hosting, and Code Ownership with Clients

I'm diving deeper into freelance web development and want to make sure I have the business side of things down. I have a few quick questions: 1. Regarding domains, should I purchase or manage the domains for my clients, or is it better for them to handle it themselves and just give me access? 2. For hosting, is it okay to deploy client websites under my own account and charge them for hosting, or should every client have their own account? 3. When it comes to source code, if a client decides to leave, do I usually hand over the entire source code, or does that depend on the contract? I'm looking to understand the most common and professional approach for these situations. Thanks!

1. I usually have clients buy their own domains. It keeps things simple, and they feel more in control. 2. For hosting, I prefer when clients have their own accounts. It reduces my responsibility in case of issues down the line. 3. As for the source code, I always hand it over once the project is done. Clients pay for the development, so they deserve to own the code.

I always suggest clients purchase their own domains. They should have ownership and access. For hosting, it might depend on the site size. For smaller projects, I sometimes host under my account, but long-term, having them manage their own hosting is better to avoid late-night tech support calls. When it comes to code, I hand everything over once the project is complete. I don’t believe in holding clients hostage.

It really varies based on the client and project. Ideally, clients register their own domain to avoid any future headaches. Regarding hosting, I suggest they create an account themselves, but I can manage it for them if they prefer. As for the code ownership, it's generally best to hand over the source code upon project completion unless specified otherwise in the contract.

It's all about setting clear expectations upfront. Always encourage clients to buy and manage their own domains. For hosting, once they're bigger, having separate accounts is much cleaner. And yes, I always provide the source code once a project is finalized. I believe in transparency and making it easy for clients to transition.
