I've got an eight-year-old PC built around an overclocked i5-8600K and a 1050 Ti with 16GB of RAM. Recently, while playing CS2 with friends, I faced some serious lag. I tried updating my graphics drivers for the first time in two months, but during the update, my screen went black and my GPU fans went into overdrive. After rebooting, my PC froze completely. I could only access it through safe mode to remove the driver, and I'm currently using Windows' default driver as a temporary fix. I'm getting errors when trying to reinstall the driver (LiveKernelEvent 1b8). Since I'm heading off to college soon, I want to upgrade the system to ensure my parents have a reliable PC. I'm considering getting an Aorus B550m, a R7 5700X, and an RTX 5060 while keeping the existing storage, case, RAM, and liquid cooling. What do you all think about this setup?

I recommend going for a 12600K with a mid-range B760 DDR4 motherboard. It’ll give you better options for future upgrades since AM4 is pretty much a dead platform now. If you want to explore graphics, look into getting a 9060XT 16GB or even a used 3080 or 4070. They're solid choices!
The RTX 5060 will be a huge upgrade! Consider the 9060 XT 16GB as well since it's a better performer with double the VRAM, and it might not be too pricey.
When selecting a new GPU, go for something with more than 8GB of VRAM. The B570, B580, 9060XT, and 5060Ti are solid options, but avoid the Intel cards as they tend to be slower. If you're looking for a budget-friendly option, a used 3080 for around $300 would be a fantastic choice!
Right on the money! A good investment for sure.
Consider getting an LGA 1700 Intel motherboard and CPU, but just keep in mind that they’re a dead platform now too. Still, I suggest the 12600K for its upgrade path to future 14th gen CPUs. Just be aware you might need a different cooler. If that's an issue, going with the AM4 setup you mentioned is a solid plan too.
I just built a new PC for my kid using a hand-me-down Intel 9400F and a 1050 Ti. They’re reliable, but I've never encountered a driver update killing a GPU before. That sounds unfortunate, and I hope you find a great replacement!
Do your parents game a lot or do they need a powerful graphics card?
Yeah, my dad plays a ton of games, especially racing and history ones. He loved RDR and even bought RDR1 remastered along with some new titles like Alan Wake 2!

I wouldn't say AM4 is entirely dead, but I agree that opting for an Intel CPU here makes sense. It allows you to future-proof with DDR5 RAM possibilities.
