Hey everyone! I graduated with a degree in computer science in 2025, but I've been working as a writer since I didn't have much coding experience. Family issues made it tough to focus on coding during my time in university. I've been thinking about applying to Google Summer of Code (GSoC) this year, but I have zero programming experience. I know a little, but I often have to look things up and rely on GPT for help. Should I go ahead and apply this year, or would it be better to learn more and aim for next year? I want to transition into development, but the job market currently has me stuck in writing. I'm hoping GSoC could help me break into the field and lead to better job offers quickly.

Honestly, if you’re not comfortable with programming yet, GSoC might not be the best fit for you right now. The job market is tough, and you’ll be up against a lot of experienced candidates. It’s great that you want to switch careers, but starting with smaller projects to build your skills could be a better pathway. This way, you can develop a solid portfolio before tackling something as competitive as GSoC. Taking your time might actually give you a better chance in the long run!
Exactly! I feel like if I work on my skills this year, I could make my application stronger for next year.
I’d say don’t rush into GSoC just because you want to switch careers quickly. It seems like you’re relying on tools like ChatGPT just to grasp the basics, which might not be enough. Take this time to really learn coding fundamentals first. If you feel passionate about it, start prepping now and consider applying next year when you’re more confident in your abilities.
Fair point! I just want to make this transition happen, but I guess patience is key.
Absolutely! With dedication and practice, you’ll get there. A foundation in coding will really help you excel!

That makes sense! If I focus on smaller projects and get more practice, do you think next year could be a better shot for GSoC?
