Can External RAM Help My Old Laptop Run Fantasy Grounds?

Hey everyone,

I've got an old laptop running Windows 10, and I'm trying to get a VTT application, specifically Fantasy Grounds, to work on it. The problem is that the laptop only has 6GB of RAM (with about 5.4GB usable), but the app requires at least 8GB. Additionally, it has an integrated AMD Radeon HD 6620G graphics card that uses system memory, which eats up even more RAM.

I'm wondering if external RAM could help resolve the issue, and if so, how much would I need? This laptop isn't for heavy use—its main purpose is for DnD sessions through Fantasy Grounds. Thanks for any tips!

There's really no concept of external RAM. The closest thing I can think of is when Windows Vista tried to market USBs as extra memory. If you just want to upgrade the internal memory, go for it—that could definitely help!

But heads up, Windows 10 is reaching EOL in just a couple of weeks. After that, you might want to explore using Linux instead, especially since it looks like Fantasy Grounds has support for it.

Good point on the EOL! I plan to upgrade the RAM (already purchased it!), but I’m considering switching to Linux if that still doesn’t work. I want this laptop to run smoothly for my friend who's into DnD!

I’ve never heard of external RAM either—does that even exist? What exactly is the problem you’re facing? Are you getting any error messages?

Yeah, I figured the external RAM idea was a bit off! I did look into it, and here’s the error I encountered in the event viewer:

"Faulting application name: FantasyGrounds.exe..." It's a bit long but includes an exception code and details on the crashing. This laptop’s just meant for casual DnD gaming, so I want to make this work easily!

External RAM? That's a new one! Unfortunately, there's no such thing. RAM needs to be physically close to the processor for quick access. Any external connection would just be too slow to help.

You might want to consider upgrading your internal RAM instead; it could help the performance a lot! But honestly, since the laptop is pretty outdated, I’m not sure how much more life you can squeeze out of it.
